The Horizon 2020 Project

The Horizon 2020 Project

COLD ENERGY: the EU challenge for energy efficiency and a low-carbon economy₂.

The European F-gas legislation1 imposes two ambitious targets:

  • Promote the phase-out of HCFCs2 and the gradual reduction of HFCs3 between 2015 and 2030, while maintaining the energy efficiency of refrigeration systems.
  • Design new installations that consume less energy through better insulation, energy recovery and the use of renewable energy.

The COLD ENERGY project is perfectly in line with the European guidelines for the cold industry, as it is an innovative technology, in terms of energy savings, applied to the cold chain, which enables

  • Energy savings of up to 23%;
  • Increased cooling capacity by up to 56% with the same compressor;
  • Increased COP4 by more than 30%;
  • Reduction of CO₂;
  • Increased EU competitiveness in the refrigeration industry;
  • Effective and efficient solution that overcomes the limitations of current energy-saving technologies applied to the refrigeration industry;
  • Applicable to both existing and new refrigeration plants.

*1) Regulation (EU) No 517/2014 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 16 April 2014 on fluorinated greenhouse gases and repealing Regulation (EC) No 842/2006. Entered into force in January 2015.
2) HCFCs = hydrochlorofluorocarbons
3) HFCs = hydrofluorocarbons
4) COP = Coefficient of Performance, corresponds to the ratio of cooling capacity to electrical power input.

The innovative character of the idea proposed by TurboAlgor was recognised by the European Commission, through the EASME (Executive Agency for Small and Medium Enterprises), which funded it through a Horizon 2020 Pilot Action FT-2016-1.

The COLD ENERGY consortium, coordinated by TurboAlgor, is composed as follows:

The EU’s challenge is also our challenge.

Turboalgor is the company at the head of COLD ENERGY, a project financed by the European Community with the aim of reducing consumption and emissions and improving the efficiency of cooling systems.

  • Increased competitiveness

    Turboalgor contributes to increasing the competitiveness of European companies in the refrigeration industry.

  • CO₂ reductions

    Using cutting-edge technology, Turboalgor is able to cut carbon emissions, in line with EU directives.

  • For new or existing systems

    With its three application solutions, Turboalgor can intervene on both new and existing systems.
